Making Sense of Types of Elder Care Facilities

There are many different types of elder care or assisted living facilities to choose from today. The challenge comes in finding what feels right for you and your loved ones. A facility that feels like home and offers high-quality, individualized care as well as a supportive community is what everyone hopes to find, but that not all types of elder care facilities offer.

With the myriad types of facilities out there, it can feel daunting to choose what’s right for you. Knowing what level of care your loved one needs is often the best place to start.
Let’s look at a few of the most common options available today and help you start narrowing down to what fits you best:

  • Independent senior living communities cater to seniors who are self-sufficient and who do not need hands-on care. Residents live in fully equipped private apartments that typically include a kitchenette, and sometimes a full kitchen. These are large communities that usually offer a broad range of intellectual, physical and social activities.

  • Assisted living communities provide housing and care to seniors who may need some assistance with daily tasks, but who do not require the skilled care provided at a nursing home. Assistance with medications, activities of daily living, meals, and housekeeping are routinely provided. Residents live in private apartments that sometimes feature kitchenettes. Staff is available 24 hours per day, activities and entertainment opportunities are plentiful and transportation to appointments is available. A special area for memory care is available in some, but not all communities.

  • Residential care homes offer many of the same services as larger assisted living facilities, but they do so in smaller, more home-like settings. Most residential care homes employ, or are are run by, nurses and are home to 10 or fewer seniors. The setting at a residential home is more intimate and the group dynamic more family-like. In fact, residents may share the home with the operator’s family and have the opportunity to interact with multiple generations on a regular basis.

  • Nursing homes are for seniors who require more intensive 24-hour monitoring and medical assistance. Typical nursing home residents suffer from severe, debilitating physical or mental conditions that leave them unable to care for themselves. They may be bedridden, wheelchair-bound, or have medical needs that require daily skilled nursing care. The good news is that modern nursing homes not only provide for residents’ physical needs, they offer activities tailored specifically to individual abilities.

Finding the right elderly care facility is such an important decision. Residential care homes can be a wonderful way to transition your loved one from their own home to a space that offers all the care they need, while still enjoying the comforts of a home.

My grandma needs some senior care. It would be good to find a place that could accommodate her the best. I'll look at some places and see which one she would like the best.

I love what you said about finding a senior community that offers intellectual, physical, and social activities. Obtaining the right senior care is essential for your elderly relative. My neighbor wants to find such a service for his grandpa, so I'll help him find the best one available.

My mother is reaching her golden years, and my family is thinking about getting her assisted care. Your article had great tips to help us choose the something like this, and I liked how you said to consider an assisted living community that can provide daily assistance with medications, activities of daily living, meals, and housekeeping. Thanks; we'll keep this in mind when choosing senior living for my mom.

My husband and I think that my mother-in-law is probably going to need more specific senior care soon because it's starting to worry us when she is home alone because she is starting to forget a lot of stuff. I appreciate that you mentioned a nursing home can provide care and medical assistance 24 hours a day and can offer activities for seniors too. A nursing home would probably be the best option for my mother-in-law since it would allow her to get the care she needs and to be less lonely. It would also help my husband and I feel better knowing she was being looked after.

It is true that wheelchair-bound individuals need a lot of care. My mom is in such a chair and can't really go to the bathroom. I'll have to consider getting her into a nursing home.

I appreciated it when you shared that there are a few communities that offer memory care services for your loved ones. My friend just mentioned the other day that she is worried about her father who can't seem to remember things well as he is diagnosed with dementia a few years ago. I will suggest to her sending her father to a reliable memory care facility so he gets to recover.
